sea hear

an hour north of kansas city up in the nowhere of northwestern missouri is about as far as you can get from an ocean. there are no beaches, just a few puddley lakes.

on sunday i went walking in our woods, along the dusty bank of a dried up creek. the hush of woods is a calming hush.

i used to go walking along a cold, esplanaded seafront. the hush of the sea, especially at night, that is a thrilling hush.

i hardly walk anywhere these days. i'm the owner of a cute little blue honda thing. i sail it over the rolling missouri hills, through oceans of wild grasses and weeds and cows.

maybe there's a giant squid out there somewhere.

the sky is always arched over everything and the light changes colors. white and gold and pearl and mushroom and grey.

okay, so what?

so that's where i am. a weedy puddle-specked ocean of mid-america.

here.

how soon will it all fade into tomorrow?

all i'm here for is to see what happens next.
