english 5420 - publications production

this class has got me thinking about telepathy in all its forms. stephen king, in his book On Writing, wrote that writing is an elementary form of telepathy: putting ideas and thoughts into a medium for others to pick up and take into their own far-distant brains. isn't that cool?

Dr David Hailey, who teaches publications production this semester, sees this too. and he sees this on a very grand scale. last class we talked about the history of printing and different printing types. we talked about how printing is used in millions of places, not just the traditional ones we think about. the embroidery on your baseball cap. the tatoos on your arm. the etching on your mirror. the engraving on your really nice jewelry box. all of it is a form of printing.

Dr Hailey is always looking at the future, and talking about the future (he's going to give a speech on the future of tech writing next thursday, january 26th, at the STC spring semester social). in his mind the possibilities of interactive, virtual instruction manuals for every kind of business or trade are very real and very close. he even mentioned the death of the keyboard in a future era where everything works according to voice commands. yikes.

for class, we have three projects. our first one is due today, and all it consists of is an idea. mine is one word: umbrellas.
