once upon a time I was utterly incapable of napping, unless I was sick or severely jetlagged. I thought sleeping was the most boring activity in the history of ever, and I was, once, young enough to happily stay up til 3am, sleep soundly til 8 or 9, and be just fine for the rest of the day.
at some point during grad school the 3am bedtimes became untenable and I learned that exactly seven and a half hours of sleep were necessary, ideal even. and since none of that amount could reliably come from naps, I planned accordingly. have you heard of https://sleepyti.me/? a useful website.
but now?
naps are a thing! I have embraced them. usually mine are short. even a 15-minute nap attempt can be lovely. if I do manage to fall asleep, 20 or 30 minutes is typical. if it's summertime and there are no pressing plans on my agenda, I can nap for a whole hour on occasion.
midmorning naps are lovely. midafternoon naps are quite nice, too.
in this mountain desert, it makes tons of sense to walk little Hamilton while it's still cooler, before 6am, then come home again and sleep a little more. why not?
I have almost mastered the skill of falling asleep comfortably enough in an upright armchair, like a kindly, serene, retired grandparent. someone give me a trophy.
(no, seriously-- it seems that competitive napping is maybe-sorta an actual sport? or a wannabe sport? I'm not sure. but maybe all they need is a Twitch.tv stream and a talented announcer-guy, and it could be the next weird internet sensation. who knows.)
